Hallie Marie sounds newly formidable on ‘A Small Man’s Pride’, a blues-rock departure that trades polished pop edges for something heavier, more direct and far more confrontational.

Built around a driving 6/8 pulse, the track gives her plenty of room to lean into the emotional force of the lyric. Buddy Speir’s guitar work carries much of the grit, while Andy Hamburger on drums and Eric Scott on bass give the song the kind of grounded weight that lets her vocal sit right at the front.

And that vocal is the real centre of gravity. Throughout, she sounds angry, bruised and increasingly certain of herself, using the song not to relive a failed relationship but to mark the point where its hold begins to disappear.

The gospel-inspired backing harmonies heighten that feeling. But instead of softening the track, they make the moments of release feel larger, almost communal, as if private frustration has been transformed into something worth shouting back.

But what gives this new release more depth than a standard breakup anthem is its refusal to treat anger as something that needs to be tidied away. She frames it as part of the healing process, particularly in the way women are often expected to make difficult emotions more palatable for everyone around them.

‘A Small Man’s Pride’ feels like a confident turning point for Hallie Marie: not just because the sound is heavier, but because the songwriting feels less interested in asking permission.
